In this team taught class students will be forging a simple steel straight razor in European style. Wedge ground, or only slightly hollow. Students may opt for a deeper hollow grind depending on availability of contact wheels and individual ability. Daily discussions on straight razor theory and application will lead students through this vintage tool. Steel to be used will be 1086 high carbon steel. Heat treatment and metallurgical discussions will enlighten students to the particulars for this object. Other components will deal with the handle scales of G-10, pins, washers and assembly. Final sharpening and honing will be instructed by the renown honing Guru, Howard Schecter of The Perfect Edge. Howard will discuss in depth the edge geometry crucial to this tool working properly as well as the techniques involved in getting there. Students may supply their own materials if desired but final approval by the instructor is required.
