Skill level: Beginner and up
This workshop will focus on casting gray iron into sodium silicate sand molds. Each student will create one or more bas-relief and one three dimensional sculpture using an oil based clay. Iron is cast using a traditional cupola furnace. The furnace construction and operation will be discussed in detail along with the different sand molding techniques. This class is open to beginner sculptors as well as beginner metalsmiths.

Lauren Holmgren and Josh Dow received their BFA in Sculpture at Massachusetts College of Art 2004/2005. Josh and Lauren work as a team casting iron and bronze for personal work and commissions. Currently, they operate Green Foundry a fine art casting service in Eliot, Maine and teach courses through the adjoined school, Sanctuary Arts.
